October was National Physical Therapy Month, and we couldn’t be prouder to recognize our therapists and the value that physical provides to those we serve. The American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) theme this year is “The Value of Physical Therapy.”  Value can be demonstrated or measured in several ways. The economic value of physical therapy (PT) is highlighted beautifully in this publication by APTA which can be found here. We were happy to see that this report highlights several areas where PT can be of economic value and where clinicians at Legacy are significantly involved, including fall prevention, pain management, and continence management. By recording data measures to produce visible outcomes, through assessments such as the Berg Balance Scale, or patient-reported outcomes, we can measure our value and analyze our therapy effects directly.

But value goes beyond cost-savings. The value of physical therapy can also be recognized in the ways PT impacts a person’s quality of life, enhances their daily function, and allows them to maintain or improve their health and safety. Physical therapy at Legacy aims to help our residents prevent or recover from injury, manage pain, potentially avoid surgery, avoid or reduce use of prescription medications, and improve overall movement and fitness. Our core programs at Legacy are specially aligned with each of these goals in some way.

We value our PTs and PTAs for the incredible impact that have on our residents and communities. Although Physical Therapy Month has ended, we recognize our PTs/PTAs throughout the year, and we want to share some of these amazing therapists with you. We say a huge “thank you” to our PTs and PTAs. We truly appreciate you!
